Fifteen Years Ago
Goob:
The snow had just started falling for the year. I was so excited because school was canceled that day. Little did I know, while my mother was walking me out to the car, that I wouldnât have to go to school for a long time.
The man sitting in the driverâs side of the black SUV didnât look like any guy Iâd ever met in my life before. He was skinny and wore a stupid looking gold windbreaker jacket. His hair looked like it was covered in grease and he had a tiny ponytail and one gold earring shaped like a lightning bolt. He looked like the kind of guy my dad would beat up. I wonder why he didnât?
My dad didnât argue at all, he just helped carry my bags out to the car and buckled me up in the back seat.
âBe good for your mother,â he said, giving me a hug.
âI want Aunt Trixie!â I yelled. âI want to see Heat!â I wanted to say goodbye to my family so that they knew I didnât run away and they wouldnât worry about me. âMom!â I screamed, kicking the back of the seat of the car.
âThey know youâre going to come hang out with me for a little while, Goob. Itâs alright. Youâll see them soon.â
âCan they come over and visit?â
âSure,â she says. She lights up a cigarette and gets in the passenger seat. My dad shuts the door behind me before I can say anything else. I see Esther standing in the doorway of the clubhouse crying. My dad goes to hug her and she shoves him into a pile of snow and starts running after the car, but itâs too late. I try to roll down my window, but itâs locked.
âI canât breathe!â I scream. I donât know whatâs happening. All I know is these two strangers are taking me away.
âIs he always so whiny?â the creepy man asks.
âHow should I know? This was your idea, Larry.â
We drive down the side of the mountain and I try and think of how Iâm going to make my great escape. I donât know where I would go if I jumped out of the car right now. My dad obviously doesnât want me. My family thinks I should go with my mom. The only person that doesnât see anything wrong with this is Esther, and what does she know? All she does is cry.
Now I want to cry. Iâm scared. I thought moms were supposed to want to hug you and take care of you, but sheâs too busy digging around in her purse to pay attention to me. Maybe she has some snacks in there.
âIâm hungry,â I whine.
âOf course that idiot didnât feed you. Thatâs just like Moses. Youâre going to have to wait,â my mom says.
âI have to go to the bathroom.â
âYouâre going to have to hold it,â Larry yells. âIâm not stopping this car til we get out of this redneck butt-fucking town. This place gives me the creeps.
